Course Description: Introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Africana Studies. Organized around central themes and forces that have shaped and been shaped by the life experience of people of African descent.
Experience: As I am currently enrolled in this course, I have so far been exposed to historical readings in Africana Studies such as "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave" by Frederick Douglass and "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Harriet Jacobs. This course has also introduced me to basic concepts and theories in African American studies such as the idea of essentialism which is linked to the origins of race and racism.
As part of this course, I have attended community events and wrote reflection papers connecting the issues discussed in such events to class readings and discussions.
