Course Description: Reasons for existence of minority groups and consequences of being subordinate. Focus on racial, ethnic, gender, and age differences. Employment, family relations, health, and general quality of life. Includes cross-national comparisons.

Experience: This was one of my favorite courses as part of the Leadership and Social Change minor. The first part of this class was spent discussing the idea of race as a social construct which included extensive research literature review as well as class discussions. Parts of this class were also dedicated to the discussion of migratory phenomena especially as those relate to the formation and maintenance of race and racism. As part of this course, I wrote topical papers throughout the semester as means of expressing my understanding of class material.

As part of SOC 2024, I attended community events and wrote short papers on those events which were of great value to my education and my experience as an undergraduate student and as a citizen.

This class was taught in an environment that fostered acceptance and openness to ideas from which I greatly benefited as it allowed students to engage in discussions, sharing of thoughts, songs, poems, or other cultural artifacts which better related the topics discussed in class to my leadership reality.
